CHAPTER TWO
BETSY HELD HER breath as the helicopter took off. After the torrential rain that had caused the floods it was a beautiful sunny day and there was not a cloud in the blue sky.
âAre you nervous about flying?â Carlos was sprawled in a seat opposite her in the luxurious cabin and appeared totally relaxed, unlike Betsy.
âIâm not a fan,â she admitted, and gasped as the helicopter jolted.
âThat was just some turbulence.â
His gravelly voice sent a shiver of sexual awareness across Betsyâs skin and she knew the knot of tension in her stomach had nothing to do with her nervousness about being in the helicopter.
She couldnât quite believe that Carlos had turned up at the cottage. If only sheâd had prior knowledge of his visit she might have been able to erect some defences against his smouldering sensuality, but instead she felt like a teenager on a first date.
âHave you flown in a helicopter before?â he asked.
âNot since I was a child and visited my father. He had a pilotâs licence and lived in a remote part of Canada which was only accessible by helicopter.â
âWhy didnât you live with him?â
âMy parents divorced when I was eight and my mother was awarded custody of me, but the access arrangement stipulated that I could spend time with my dad.â
Betsy looked away from Carlos and stared out of the window as memories crowded her mind. After the divorce she had lived with her mother in London, but every school holiday sheâd been put on a plane to Toronto to visit her father. Towards the end of one visit, Drake Miller had driven her to a small airfield where they had boarded a helicopter.
âWeâre going to have an adventure,â heâd told her. âJust you and me, exploring one of the wildest areas of Canada.â
âIs Mum okay with it?â Betsy had felt uneasy. âI have to go back to England before school starts next week.â
âThe truth is, honey, that your mother doesnât want you living with her any more.â Drake had frowned when sheâd started to cry. âHey, what are your tears for? Donât you want to be with your old dad?â
Of course she did, she had quickly assured him as sheâd scrubbed her tears away. Sheâd loved both her parents. But she thought she must have done something terrible for her mum to have sent her away permanently.
Six months later the Canadian police had arrived at the log cabin in a remote part of British Colombia where Betsy had been living with her father and sheâd learned the truth. Drake had kidnapped her. He had lied when heâd said that her mother did not want her. Heâd maintained that he had done it because he could not bear to live apart from his only daughter. But Betsy suspected that heâd kept her hidden out of spite, as part of his festering feud with her mother.
Her childhood had left her with a deep mistrust of the concept of romantic love, and she could not understand why she had fallen under Carlosâs spell so completely.
